Both sides to tho Railway Conference have accepted a scheme practically identical with that embodied in (he report of tho Railway Strike Commission. Tho companies have made concessions in other matters, including the status of casual labourers. Tho modifications made by the conference will tend to tho speeding of work by tho conciliation boards. Each company is to settle increases in wages and reduction in hours, giving an answer in writing within six weeks of tho receipt of a petition by twenty-five per cent, of its employees in any grade. The boards will meet next May, but tho alterations will not operate till July. It was agreed that casual bands should be paid at hourly rates, not lower than the minimum rates of the permanent men. The executives of four unions have decided to accept tho agreement. _ The directors regard it as a fair compromise.
