Councillor Welch introducd n deputation ot Epimi Hamlet ratepayers Mr-Bardslcy, who.acted as'spokesman, stated that the drainage of the hamlet was inefficient. Settlers on tho lower side of the main road had no outlet for drainage. The whole of the drainage from the school, which had been open for eight years, and had an average attendance of 120 pupils, went into a blind creek.' It had been going there for seven or eight years and Epuui residents considered that this was responsible for .the scarlet fever and other epidemics that broke out periodically. The Education Board eduld not construct drains because there was nothing to connect them to. A septic tank might provide a solution. The' deputation had not come as experts. Thev did not a=k for sewage, but simply as ratepayers to ask that something should be done. The Government; Dairy Inspector had forbidden dairy farmers along one creek in the hamlet to even cool their cans in its water, so that it must .be pretty bad. It was said that a Government vote of .£l3O for drainage had been diverted and spent on footpaths. Epuni Hamlet had a population of about 215 souls, and they hoped that it would increase, if they got drainage. The deputation also desired that three kerosene lamps should be provided for road lighting. The chairman said that an engineer's 'report would have to be obtained ou tho subject of drainage. Mr. Bardsley said the matter was very urgent. The chairman suggested that as the hamlet was Government property, the Government should be asked to assist. It was agreed that Councillor Welch and Mr. Cudby (Inspector of .Works) should be asked to visit the hamlet, and report to the council at its next meeting. The Public Works Department notified that if the undermentioned grants, were not spent within two months tho Government would carry out ttie works:— Odlin's Road,- JCIOO additional.
