THE TERRIBLE THREE KINGS.
S.S.. WIMMTGIU HA? TO FEEL HEB WAY WITH THE LEAD. (By Teleirraph.—Rocclal Correeoondest.l Auckland, December 11. Tho necessity of a light, with an efficient fog signal attached on tho Three Kings islands, was well on the trip of tho s.e. Wimtuera from Sydney. She left Sydney six hours late, but made good running, and it was expected that she would arrive at Auckland at 4 p.m. yesterday. On Saturday evening, when about 50 miles to tho westward of tho Three Kings, tho weather gradually set in thick. At 10.80 p.m., tho distance to abreast of tho islands had boon run, Tho engines were then slowed dowu and soundings taken. Soundings were struck in 130 fathoms and, from then on to 2.30 a.m., the vessel was slowed, tind soundings frequonttv taken with decreasing depths. At 2.30 a.m. the fog lifted, and Capo Mario. Van Diernen light w;ia piphted. Had there been a lighthouso with fog signals on tho Threo Kings it would have been of groat valuo in helping to define tho vessel's pasition as tho sound would have been heard a good distance o(T. Tho weather, though thick, was favourablo for sound transmission.
