A great race. Won by a nose. Time, limn, i i-ssac. NOTES ON TIIE RACING. (By Teloeraph.-Spccial Correspondent.! Woodville, December 9. The Woodville Club was mest unfortunate on Saturday, as in the early morning a heavy pale rased, v;hich ended in a thunderstorm at 10 a.m., nnd thus prevented hundreds from attending the meeting. The rain continued till prior to the start of the hi? handicap, when it cleared up and the gale came on again.

The jroing soon got on the heavy side, but it improved greatly as tho day advanced, and to-day should bo nearly at its best. Despite tho disadvantages under which the officials laboured, the whole of the events were got off well to iime. The totalizator staff did not seem al)lo to cope with tho rush, and in several events, notably tho Ijig handicap, large sums were shut out from tho machine.

In the opening event it was difficult to pick up tho colours at the barrier, as the min was coming down in torrents. King's Favourite was the only two-year-old in the race, and he began very fast, with I'oyal Arms next and Mira, who, as usual, began slowly, in the rear. Tho favourite had taken chargo at the turn, and then Mira commenced to move up, and after n great effort ho got up in time to se : cure second place from Matlow. Waitai fell, and lost his rider, W. Adams, wjio, however, was unhurt.

Cullhan, Royal Patron, and Pnkefcotara were withdrawn from the Hack j Hurdles, leaving eight runners. Stralli- ! nioini was made favourite, and with Canadian carried on tho running for a mile, with All Trumps next and Captain last. Down the ixuJc Pol.vniecs was going easily, and, taking charge at_ tho bottom, ho ran in a comfortablo winner. Strathmoira finished well, but the Bulls pair, Mahuta and Moonhall, ran badly. There were nine defections from the Cirajndstand Hack Ttaco, but still a useful field' of eleven faced Mr. O'Connor. .Tarpon (\V. Price) was the favourite selection, and the public, this time were not astray in their calculations, although the minor places wo.ro filled by two rank outsiders. Mere Mere loci off at the start, but Jargon soon ran alongside, him, and tho pair were just clear of Overheard (i.s they raced across tho bottom, with the remainder badly strung out. and whipped in by Awba. In the run down tho straight Mere Mere compounded, but Jargon easily held his position and wo,n comfortably. Melologue finished well under the stick, and brat Overheard for second pbice. Goldon Ago was eloso no fourth, and finished very fast. Pot Luck wns next, and appeared to get a bad.riin.

First Batlery and Coromandel both stripped well in the Woodville, Hundicivp, and the pair carried tho bulk of the public money, At tie start Britieli ilaid.

and Marton led at a fast pann, aud going out of the straight the field quickly spread. Down Ihe back- British Maid shook off Marton, and at the .straight entrance Coromandel was nearest the leader. Down the running liiey and Voetgang joined in, but nothing could make an impression on British Maid, whom 11. Watson landed i\ clever winner by a length. The connections of the dinner were, very confident of the result, and landed a good slake. The Merrie England filly is a member of G. N'eieli s team, wh'ich is trained at Clarcville. She surprised most people at getting the ten furlongs, but there was no fluke about the win, and on that' form she should score again during Ihe Christmas season. Cheddar finished.lust, and on returning to scale it was noticed that Jenkins had broken both his leather?. Once again the unlucky Taft acted as runner-up in the Flying Hack Handicap. Crown Pearl was the paddock eelectioii and his people thought he could not loss and thus it came about that lie, started a better favourite than Taft whom public form pointed to. Tnfi ' atter v, ' as quickly prominent \yhen the tapes were released, but Palestine was as good as ho down the back, at which point tho favourite was lying third. At the distance the success of Crown Pearl seemed assured, but while Palestine fell back, Taft raced on and soon ha<l the favourite in difficulties. Then, as if from the clouds, tho light-weight Florence Nightingale appeared on the scene and Taft tiring, she beat him homo by a length with Turna third. He also came from a long way back and in addition got stopped in the straight when trying to get up on the rails. For tho Borough Ilandicap tho public sent out Mr. E. J, Waifs Auckland Cup candidate Midnight Sun the hottest favourite of the day, but the 3-year-old found his weight too much in the going and after running a good race, he had to' Bubm.it to defeat from the San Fran mare Splash who was quite at homo in • tho heavy going. The runner-up put forth a (rreat effort and it was no disgrace to him to bo defeated by a mare to whom he was conceding a stone and three years. Seatondale ran prominently to tho turn where ho fell back beaten.

Another favourite in Stevens -was beaten in the- Welter Hack which went to the Palea-owned Plantation, a member of T. Quinlivan's, sen., team. The black gelding was ridden by I'. D. Jcncs, who allowed Loch Maben to make the running: til! well into the straight, when he forged Plantation ahead and won easily. Sir Knox was galloped on early and after petting a very bad run just headed Loch Maben for second money.

It was left to the Electric Handicap to produce thn finish of the. meeting. Taft, who was saddled up again, was made favourite and led to tho turn, where Master Sylvia collared him and fho iield closed up. The Taranaki representative and Gold Battery then forged ahead nnd in a head-and-head finish over the last hundred yards, Gold Battery got the last stride in and won by si nose.
