THE AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS
CONCLUDING BAY. (By TelecraDh-Presa Association.) Auckland, December 10. The Auckland competitions wore brought to a successful conclusion last ni-ht. A number of special prizes were given, including the following-.— Ks=ay on Hishop Selwyn-Mr. Curler (Wellington), lj Mrs. Andrew (Mount llos''original Story (amateux)-Miss L. EastKate , (Auckland), 1; Mrs. i. D. Cray (Wcl--1 Third,' fourth, and fifth places in the solo pianist: recital-Mr. Baxter Buckley (Inverciirßill), Mi«s Barry Snodgrass (1C Puke), Miss N. Kidley (Dnnedin). Premier lady vocalist—Miss L. Cardner (New lij-nn). ' Premier male vocalist—Mr. A. Eipley (Duucdin). Premier kdy elocutionist—Miss Z. Bnrtlcy (Auckland). , ' Premier gentleman elocutionist—Mr, it. Borrodale (Auckland). Some interesting i-emarks on tho competitions were inade by 'Professor Ives, who judged tho musical section. In pome rcspecL';, he said, thn comiietilious had impressed him wrj' favourably; in others ho had been a littlo disappoints. 'J he byst work was done in the violin and pianoforte sections. Kxcollcnt work was being dono in Auckland in tnaching tho violin. If Miss Hosworlh were sent to si ink in the great musical wnLros of tho Old World she would be a credit to Now Zealand. In the solo pianist recital the niuyic was too easy for such nn im))ortaiit prize, and Rave chances to players who really had no claim to lw in tho class at oil. The prize was too big lor :i musical competition in any caw.
