A WEEKLY REVIEW. Teachers and others interested in the administration of education are invited to contribute notes for publication in "The School World." Those should ho addressed to tho Editor, "The School World," Tun Dominion; Wellington, and pouted to reach this office not later than Wednesday in each week. Correspondents desiring enlightenment upon any question in connection with tho school work, or the general adminis-. tration of the education system, are invited to submit those- points to tho Edi- . tor for elucidation and reply. Whcro anonymity is desired, it will lie strictly observed. A letter was rccent.lv cent in to tho Auckland Education Board from tho local teachers' Training Institute, stating that lliu time, had arrived when lady teachers should bo cligiblo for the higher positions in the schools, ranging between JCISO and .£2lO per annum. Tho board has decided to give tho question its consideration. A petition was recently received bv tho Auckland Education Board from 78 pupil teachers at the Training College, proving that attendance at tho collcgo bo ' not inado compulsory. Tho petitions complained that tho reputation stipulating this was only brought into operation cfter many of them had joined tho profession, and further that six and a half years was too long an apprenticeship. Consideration has been deferred. In dealing with arithmetic in an address on the. practical problems of education Mr. E. Watkins, principal of tho Canterbury Training College, pointed out that frequent complaints were made bv shopkeepers that tho boys who went into their employ could not even givo change and he pointed out that this was owing to the iact that the shopkeeper gave his change on tho plan blown as complementary addition, which is asked for bv tho present New Zealand syllabus, but which cannot bo worked in schools without tho provision of boxes of imitation coins and smaller classes than at present. Recent appointments in tho Hawko's Bay district—Miss C. Milne, assistant, ttoodville; Miss Lange, assistant, Makaraka; Miss Bradbury, assistant, YVaipaw;a; Miss Chambers, assistant Rakauroa; Miss Cross, assistant, Dannovirkc North; Miss Player, assistant, Clive; Miss Martvn, assistant, Tologa Bay; Mr. F G Kibblewkite, assistant, To Hapara (since resigned); Miss I. Brown, assistant, Norsewood; Miss G. Bargin, assistant, Tipapakuku; Miss Payne, assistant, Palutahi; Mr. L. MBeau, solo teacher, Matawai. During the past month 22 informations have been laid against parents of irregular attendee, in the Hawke's Bay district. Thirteen of these have been heard and convictions recorded in each ease, tho finos and costs indicted amounting to .£l7 17s. Gd. Informations are laid only in cases of persistent breachf'3 of _ tho law: tho magistrate 'recognises this, and the infliction of heavy penalties will act as a sharp reminder'to careless parents and will tend to materially decrease the number of offenders.
