THE SMASH ON THE HUTT EOAD.
Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., gave judgment vesterday in tho case of a claim for £GG 13s. At, as damages, made by Beatrice Amy Pinnock.(in business as the Arcadia laxi-cab and Touring Car Service) against John Kier, of Wellington, contractor. The damage was alleged to havo ten caused by the circumstance that Kicr's servant had so negligently and unskilfully managed a timber jigger that it had come into collision with a motorcar on the Hutt Eoad after nightfall, and in the impact the car had suffered. The claim included an item set out i-s loss of profit during the period of repairs (thirteen days, £19 10s.). Mr. Samuel appeared for the plaintiff, Beatrico Amy Pinnock, and Mr. Jackson for the defendant, John Kier,
His Worship found for tho defendant. In his judgment, he stated that he was of the opinion that the motor-car had been running on the wrong side of the road when it had grazed ono of the horses in tho leading vehicle, and had ultimately como to grief on the hind wheel of the third wagon.
Mr. Francisco Berber, the Anglo-Aus-trian composer and pianist, has resignrd the post of honorary secretary to the London Philharmonic Society, which he has filled for twenty-eight years. His successor will bo Mr. William Wallace, the composer of tho symphonic poem "Villon" and other notable works marked with modern feeling. Mr. Berger, who was born in London, is 6evonty-sevcn years of age. When eight years old ho apSrared as a "child prodigy" pianist, iokens was one of his close friends.
Whilo a crowd was watching a fire at the premises of Messrs. Boots, Limited, chemists, at Attercliffe, Sheffield, an explosion of gas occurred, blowing out the windows of tho shop and causing injuries to several spectators and firemen. The fire brigade had just got tho flames under when tho explosion occurred.
