PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Special Correspondent.! Palmerston, December G. A prolonged alarm on tho firebell at 1.30 this morning startled people out of their slumbers, the cause being a fire in the Rising Sun Cafe in the Square, conducted by Mr. S. Santos. The fire brigade was quickly on the sc-eue, aud confined the outbreak to the kitchen, where it started. Not a great dea.l of damage was done, the fire being discovered by the nightwatcliman before it had vet much hold. The building is owned "by Constable Broen, of Bulls. The contents of the kitchen are insured in the Allianeo office for .£IOO. When the proprietor left the premises at midnight everything was apparently safe.
A new Convent High School and boarding establishment is to be opened hero on Monday next.
The Borough, Council met last night, the Mayor presiding. The. engineer reported ' that the work of raising the height of the dam at the waterworks at Tiritea was proceeding satisfactorily. Permits for buildings were issued dunnc; the month to the amount of ,£2845, and ihe improvements and strengthening of I lie exits at the Opera House would be completed this week. The owners of 710 dogs paid .£223 I.ls. for fees to the Borough Council mi? inn the present year.
