MASTBRTON NOTES
(From Our Special Correspondent.! Masterton, Detcinber 6. A man named John Greenbank, licensee of the Blairlosio Hotel, died at Loivor Taucru to-day whilo being conveyed to tho Masterton Hospital. He had .been under medical treatment.
Mr. Aitred P. Rawson, surveyor, and an old resident of Masterton, died in the hospital this morning alter a protracted illness, at the ago of Gt. Ho was a brother of Dr. Rawson, of Wellington, and' Air. H. P. Rawson, dentist, of that city. Ho was cno of the first students at Nelson Ccllcgo. Mr. Jon-i Catt, senior, one of the very earliest settlers of tho Wairarapa, died at Upper Plain this morning, at the ago of 95.! Ho leaves a widow, a growu-up family, and many grandchildren. Things aro particularly quiet politically in this, part, notwithstanding that wo are. on the eve of tho election. The three candidates tnake a final appeal to-night— . two in the open-air and one' in tho 'Town ,-Hall. It is .tfrat-theie'-"will be a second ballot, and that "Mr'.'Hogg .will be in that ballot. Opinions are dividod, however, as to which Opposition .candidate will make, tho. second'appeal. 'It is feared that there' will be a split ic the Opposition votes at the finish, and that this will enable Mr. Hogg to squeeze in with a much-reduced majority.
The usual meeting of the 1.0. R. was held last evening, when there was a large attendance. The Tent decided to. donate a sum of .£5 ss. to the funds of the local No-License Xeaguo. Members pledged themselves to do all in their power to retain No-License.
The revenue received from the_ Masterton gasworks for the month of November showed a net increase of ,£llO over tho figures for the corresponding month last year.
It has been decided that the Park Fete is to bo held on February 1, instead of -on Boxing Day ,as originally decided. The comedy "Jane" is to bo staged by local amateurs in aid of the funds of the Masterton Amateur Athletic Club.
Mr. L. Devonport has been re-elected president of tho local branch of tho Women's Christian Temperance Union, and Mrs. E. Flanagan secretary.
