Allan (members of thr board), Mr. G. L. Stewart (secretary of (he Education Board), mid Mr. H. S. Wardell (president of the Academy of Fine Arts).
lu opening the proceeding?, the chairman (Mr. Robertson) referred to tho excellent- progress which had boon made by thfl hchool during the past year.
Au interesting review of the year's work whs then given by Mr. W. S. La Trobe (director of the tchoul). Generally speaking, ho said, there hod boeii evident an upward tendency in th,o character of the work which had formerly been dono by tho pupil?, whilo the increasing roll number was also an indication of tho satisfactory position in which the school now stood. There were now, altogether, 1577 pupils in attendance at tho school, a 5 per cent, increase on tho number on the roll the previous year—lsoo. (Applause.) Tho attendances at the day classes had, on the whole, been very satisfactory. Two of tlio pupils (ravelled 15 miles ovory day to the school. Tho Standing need of the school was more amplo accommodation. Under pres-ent conditions, said Mr. La Trobe, the best work could not be done. Some- of the classes wore housed in very indifferent quarters. Referring to contemplated extensions of the school syllabus next year, tha director stated that it was intended to provide a practical course for boys who aspired to farming pursuits. Tho subjects would include chemistry, botany, physiology, woodwork, carpsntry,. ironwork, etc". For the girls, too, tho syllabus would be enlarged to provido instruction in the science of common things. The number of passes in the class exami•nations showed au increase in those of tho previous- year. In the dny. classes the ' number. was 195, an increaso of 10, and in tho, evening, classes, GKi, a.n increase of 21. In point of awards in the examinations in technology, which were conducted under the auspices of such British examining- bodies as the City and Guilds of London Institute, the Wellington Technical School was equal to the averago school of tho name kind in the Old Country. There were, however, certain disadvantages—mainly geographical—which suggested, to' Ms-mind the ultimate establishment of a system of national competitions in Now Zealand, conducted with the co-operation and assistance of "the City and Guilds' examiners. '■ Under present conditions the doto-of the Home examinations fell, in New-Zealand, in the middle of the.school year, and candidate-; at iho beginning-of-the year- were faced with the option of taking their ex<imini\tion* within six months, or waiting for a year and a liall".
The Departmental regulations which fccured recognition by the Government of day technical classes, had ber-n very successful, and in providing intellectual occupation and technical training: for boys who had just, left school, and, were unable to makf a definite cemmeneemout with their life's work till they' reached the age. of sixteen—according to tho law of apprenticeship—had proved .their utility. They had come to stay. _ The director concluded an interesting hddross with acknowledgments to all who had 'a.«iste(l; by donations, and in other ways, to advance the prosperity of the school. -
■ The students were, then- addressed by Sir-Robert. Stout, .who delivered an encouraging homily to his youthful audi-ence.-urging them to make tho most of ihnir ■opportunities, afterwords prepo'iti'l'i tho prizes and certificates, as follows (finnip of the awards' were published in 'The Dominion", yosterd.ay)-.— .. ; ;..., 'the awards.
