Some 200 love letters, filled with mystia signs, were presented in tho Supreme Court, New s'ork, on October IG, m ail action claiming .CIO,OOO damages for breach of promise, brought by Mr. Jiusscll A. Griswold, aged twenty-eight, against Miss Helen-Woodruff Smith, daughter'of the late Mr. .lames D. Smith, president ot' tho New \"orlc Stock Exchange, and commodore of the New York Yacht Club. The, defendant inherited ,£,100,000 from father, and tho bill, .of complaint against her sots forth the heartrending details of how she. wasted nine years 'of the plaintiff's life by promising him marriage when, at the close of his college career, he became a bank clerk.
The plaintiff, who is now a member, of the ohorus appearing in a Philadelphia, theatre, informed' tho jury in tragic, ;iccents tliat ho was eighteen years of ago when tho defendant, told him that slio loved him to distraction, and induced liini to. abandon liis banking career and perform odd jobs at her country residence. Slio showered on him presents, such as diamond scarfpins, rings, socks, and ties, and ho implicitly believed her when sho exclaimed, "Wo .wcro oLadc for '- cavli other, and must have met first in" another world," adding, "Ruxzielamb, • will yuu marry me?" . .
