At the opening of tho monthly meeting of the Auckland Land Board on Wednesday, Mr. l\ Lawry said ho desired to say a few words iu reference to tho approaching retirement of the chairman, Mr. Eric C. Gold Smith, from the positions of Commissioner of Crown Lauds and chairman of the Land Board for tbe Auckland Land District. Mr. Gold Smith's views on laud matters wero always quoted with respect as those of a capable administrator, an officer of varied experience in the service of tho Lands and Survey Department, and a public servant whose integrity and honesty of purpose could not bo impugned. Tho members of the board prosent also spoke in hearty endorsement of Mr. Lawry's remarks. Mr. Gold Smith briefly acknowledged the kind expressions of feeling that had been uttered by Mr. Lawry and by tho members of tho board, • saying that while their official relationship might now be terminating, he would remember with keen appreciation the pleasant nature of that relationship, and ho trusted that their private friendship would long continue.
