HUTT.

Despite the Bhow'ery night, Mr. E. W. Short, lteform candidate for Hutt, had a very good meeting at Upper Hutl on Thursday night, when about 100 persons (several being ladies) were present, Mr. J. J. Quinn presided. The speaker was frequently applauded, the termination of the address being marked with much enthusiasm.

There were about 60 electors, at King George Theatre, Lower Hutt, last evening, when Mri J. W. M'Ewan, Independent candidate, delivered an address. Ho said he was opposed to the present Government, and had been for fifteen years. He had served an apprenticeship through, the municipality in Pctone.. He severely, criticised the Government's methods regarding salaries: and increases in • the Civil Service. ■ He would support a hoard of control if returned. • The candidate was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
