Captain Foster, of the steamer Lord .Lonsdale, recently at Wellington from New York ■ with ease-oil for the Vacuum Oil Co., has had some experiences with deserters at Newcastle. Two men were charged at the Newcastle Polico Court with deserting the 6hin. and Captain Foster said that just prior to the vessel sailing the men managed to slip a.way, and their absence was not discovered until the vessel was under way. He could not sail shorthanded, and had to bring the ship to and crulso about outside Nobbys until he made up his crew. The captain furthor. pointed out. to the Oourt that it was almost impossible to get sailors at Newcastle, and when .they did succeed it was only by paying 'that iniquitous charge called "blood money to runners." That, no doubt, had something to do with his two men deserting. In all probability they had been decoyed from his ship with a view to being passed off to some other ship that was short of men, His ship was on a timo charter, and the present delay meant serious loss to his owners, ne asked that the deserters should be placed on board. This the Bench ordered, nnd tho seamen were put on the polico launch, and taken outside to their vessel. ARRIVAL OF CORINTHIC. Now on her twenty-third voyage from London to Wellington, the? The vesfel then encountered light S.E. trades and S.W. winds untU arrival at Cape Town at 1.48 a.m. on November 3. Tho South African port was left at 8.4 p.m. on the same day, and two days later a heavy S.E. gale was encountered. Heavy ecus flooded the decks, and made things unpleasant. Theso conditions prevailed until the Corinthie was three days' steam from Hobart. The bad weather in tho Southern Ocean delayed tho vos.se! two days, and arrival was made at the Tasmanian port on November 24.
