Hunt, Federal Meteorologist, declares the widespread bolief at present in Australian prosperity is due to the exceptional raiui'all. That droughty years are certain to follow is not correct, since tlio 1802 rainfall was below the average. 13ut tho farmers have benefited by (lie mistakes of the pioneer; and the capabilities of the soil are belter understood. The adoption of dry farming and droughtresisting wheat has given payable crops in spite of a poor rainfall. Better control of tho rabbit pest, conservation of water and fodder and tho lapping of an artesian basin had also helped in tho prosperity. This shouid bo an incentivo to greater energy.
