SHANNON'S POST OFFICE.
1 OPENED BY THE PREMIER. Sir Joseph, Ward formally opened- the now post office yesterday. There was a largo attendance of bottlers and residents present wliou Mr. \V. H. Held, M.P., introduced the Premier. The chairman of the Horoivhonua County Council also welcomed Sir Joseph Ward, nnd suggested that ho mieht borrow a leaf from his predecessor, Mr. Scddon, and visit Shannon moro frequently in future. The Premier briefly sketched the postal of llio, district. The first local post office was opened in ISS7, money order iuid savings bank department* wero 'inaugurated in 18Di, uikl a telegraph office, in 18!)]. A permanent office was created in ISO". Iu 1900 the uuniber of letters and postcards, posted was Ji.OOO, and in 1910 the unmbcr had increased lo UZ.iWIn J9OO (hi! value of moiiev orders iv;i3 .£ll3l, ii'.wl. in 1910, it had inc.reas.od to nearly 10,000. After referring briefly to water-pc-wer development <md tfio prevailing prosperity, the Premier declared tho building open. At the Premier's request the schoolchildren wen- granted a hall-holiday. Th« Ministerial parly lunched at (he Club Hotel, and left For Levin by the 2 p.m. train. Lady Ward and Miss Eileen Ward accompanied the. I'rcmio.r. and Mr. If. M'Nab, tlip Government candidate for Palnierston North, motored us iar as Shannon, ami then returned to Palmcr&ton. .North.
