Mr. John Hays Hammond, who was the United States envoy to England on the occasion of tho Coronation of King George, speaking at a banquet, gave what he said was the inside history of tho Jameson raid. Tho chief agitators were Americans, who did not act at any time under tho British flag. Tho imposition; of the late President Kruger were such as no Anglo-Saxon could stand for a single minute. Dr. Jameson entered intf tho reform movement against tho wishei of others. Kruger had played false towards the Reform Commitlee. Ho gave the men to understand that if the; pleaded guilty they would merely hi fined; instead, they w«ro condemned t< death. The intervention of 3lr. Olnej (then United States Secretary, of State, alone saved the reformers from executiou within twenty-four hours of sentence being passed.
