"So many amateur doctors—quacks, I call them—are permitted in this country to treat and even operate upon poor dumb animals," complained Mr. Seed, S.P.C.A. Inspector, at Hie meeting of that body last evening. Mr. Seed went on to remark that anyone could call himself a veterinary surgeon in this country; there was no law to prevent it. He was surprised that , the Government did not take action in the j matter. Sir. Seed mentioned that ho had shot a horse that week which had been suffering for a fortnight from a broken leg. The owner of the animal, a Chinaman, had not known what was wrong with it, and had allowed himself to be guided bv some amateur who said that the horse would be nil right. An official trial of tho new Charlotte Street loop-line was made yesterday. All that is required now to make the line available for use is tho official intimation from the Public Works Department that tho line is safe. As soon as this certificate is supplied, the Karori servico will bo diverted along the new line. In tho interests of the very young children of Hataitai and that neighbourhood, who are at present obliged to traverse either a very exposed and windy track to the Roseneath School or proceed 1 to tho Kilbirnio North School, a deputation representing tho Hataitai and Koseneath Ratepayers' Associations interviewed the Wellington Education Hoard at its meeting yeterday with regard to their suggestion that a side school, located in Hataitai and attached to tho lloseneath School, should be provided by tho board. A similar request somo time ago was met with the reply that in tho opinion of tho board the schools at lloseneath nml Kilbirnie were sufficient to meet tho requirements of tho district. In reiterating the request, Mr. Leigh Hunt, for the Hataitai Ratepayers' Association, and 31r. Smith, for tho Roseneath Association, emphasised their opinion that at no distant date the rapid expansion of the Hataitai population would create tho necessity for a separate school. Tho road to tho Roseneath School was, for very young children, a most exposed one—the most exposed and wind-swept in Wellington, said Mr. Hunt —while it was the general opinion of residents in the. locality that tho Kilbirnio School was damp and unsuitable. Replying to the deputation, tho chairman (Mr. Robert Leo) said that tho board had to administer its funds in the general interests of education in tho district, and could not afford to multiply schools to suit everybody's convenience. Subsequently the matter was referred to the Works Committee for a report. "The Prince of Wales lias been promoled to enjoy an occasional cigarette since his seventeenth birthday," says the "Cigar and Tobacco World.", "It would seem tho King nnd Queen did not wish their eldest son to smoke until his seventeenth birthday, and on that day he received many gifts representing the smoker's small luxuries. If rtimour speaks truly, the young Prince shows no great enthusiasm as a smoker, and is quite satislied with tho three cigarettes a day which are allotted to him until ho reaches his eighteenth birthday." Intimation lias been received by Win Wellington Education Board of the authorisation by tho Government iu the following grants for school sites or holdings:—Ngaio (inclusive of sito), _£107G; Kaiwarra (inclusive of sito), .£587 lfe.; Plimmerton (inclusivo of site), .£510; Masterton (increased accommodation), .£2012 10a.! At Yeov.il (Now South Wales) recently an Indian hawker named Buder Deen was playfully wrestling with another, man, i and had some pins and needles in the . lapel of his coat. After five minutes ftruggling ho complaincd of a needle ' being in his chest. Ho was immediately ' conveyed to Cumnock, and operated upon, ; but without extracting the needle. Sub- . soquentlr Dr. Watt, of Wellington (Now South Wales), successfully operated and ' located the needle in very .close proximity 3 to tho heart, it having pierced the peri--5 cardium. During 24 hours the lieedio t travelled over 8 inches, and the doctor's ,• opinion was that ho was just in timo to |7 save his life by about three hours. s A child aged 16 months, the son of E. / Staggard. had a miraculous escape from f death at I'orlarlington (Victoria) recently, j; He was being wheeled ill a go-cart along the highest part of the esplanade by his ' mini, who noticed that she had dropped 1 her handkerchief.
