CHANGES SOUGHT FOE FOXTON. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, November 24. Tho Orchestral Society gave a concert at tho Opera House last evening, but, owing to counter-attractions and unfavourable weather, tho attendance- was not as largo as usual. Mrs. \Y. T. Penny was the lady vocalist of the evening, and Mr. F. V. gave several amusing monologues. Mr. P. K. Johnstone was tho 'cello soloist. The Foxton Harbour Board held a special meeting here yesterday afternoon, Mr. P. J. Hennessey presiding. Tho sccXctarv reported that there.was. credit balance "of ' XM\ 12s. 'Sd., the receipts sinco Inst-meeting being .El7O 55., and the expenditure JCIW l.'ls. lid. Tho secretary asked to be relieved, and it was left to tho Foxton members of tho board to make arrangements. The engineer wrote in reference to the shoaling of the river opposite- the West Coast Snipping Coruiiany's coal line. A contract hud been let "for the construction of a dredge, which had bceii completed, and the work of removing tho shoal would bo commenced directly after the present spring tide. On tho motion of Mr. J. A. Nash, a vote of thanks was accorded Mr. E. Newman, M.P., for securing a vote of .£250 for deepening the river, and also to the chairman for his services in crmioction with the Foxton Harbour Beard Empowering Hill, and ho was voted .£2O, to recoup expenses. A deputation of pro-perty-owners, from Foxton beach, waited on the board in connection with a request for assistance in tho construction of a jetty and providing a life-boat. Mr. K. E. 15. Holben, tho spokesman, stated that, a meeting dad been held, with a view to securing such improvements at tho heads as would minimiso tho danger of a repetition of tho lamentable accident which had recently happened there. They had subscribed" JCIOO, and they now a;k?d tho board to assist. It was estimated that n jetty would cost .£250, the board to havo full control. It was also suggested that, a life-boat and other equipment should be provided.. Mr. B. Gardner moved that the chairman and Messrs. Nash, Barber, and Gibbs be a committee to consider the request of tho deputation, and report to tho next meeting. Tho piict reported that there had been littlo alteration in the river since last report. At high-water spring tides there was a depth on thy bar of lift, to 12ft., and 9ft. at neap tides. The river was in good order from the bar up to the wharf. Loyal Mannwalu Lodge of Oddfellows, M.U., met last night, when there was a good attendance. As tho next meeting fell on tho date of the general election, itwas decided to alter it to December Si.
The Mauawatu Officers' Club held a "social" last night, at which there was a large attendance. The earlier portion of the ovening was devoted to a progressive euchre tournament. The prizes were won bv Mesdames Garner auu Lovelock and Messrs. Young and Yeruou. Refreshments wcro served, and, afterwards, a "social" and dance was hold. Items wore rendered bv Captains Lyon and Murray, and Messrs. U. N. Jickell, Lyall, and Jacobs, the accompaniments being played by Mr. C. W. Naylor. The music for the dances was supplied by Mrs. C. Louisson, Misses O'Brien and Pettit, and Mr. Naylor. Many visitors, including officers who aro undergoing their examinations, took part in the function. Thero arc S26j names on the Palmerslon electoral roll, including 1123 on tho supplementary 'list.
The report to be. presented lo the annu:il meeting of the Mannwatu Pliiliiophicul Society next week slates that fourteen now members were elected last year, bringing Ihe total roll to 70. Papers on various subjects of scientific and general interest were read at the society's meetings bv Captain Hewitt. R.N., and Mr. H. T. B. Drow, Miss A. F. Ironside, Rev. A. Doull, and Mr. R, Henry, Mr. Justice Chapman, Miss Souper, Sir Robert Stout, Mr. J. E. Vernon, and Mr. A. Hamilton. The society was indebted to Mr. A. Hamilton, Director of the Dominion Museum, wko devoted a week lo arranging ami elassifving the exhibits in their new habitat. The executive of the Palmerston North Hospital met yesterday to consider tho question of the women's consumption annexe. It. was decided to write lo the Inspector-General (Dr. Valinl.ine), asking him to discuss the proposals with the board on Iho ground. A visit of inspection was paid to the site of the proposed Old Men's Home at Awapuni, and improvements of tho grounds and fences were derided un.
