CANNON-LIKE ROAR.
EXPLOSION IN OIL-CAKE HILLS. THIRTY-THREE KILLED, 100 INJURED. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright London, November 24. A m-J3t disastrous explosion occurred at Eibby's oil-cake mills, Liverpool, resulting in thirty-three persons being killed and .it least 100 being so badly injured as to have to bo scut to the hospital. The mnjority sustained ghastly injuries. When the explosion took place thero was 'a cannon-like roar. The- hugo buildin" shook so violently that the 100 employees were thrown to the floors, which R-emcd to be shooting out flames. The roof was blown off, and showers of debris descended in the neighbourhood of the mills. Somo of the walls of the building collapsed. Tho rest of the mill was soon aflame. There were appalling scenes. Hundreds of workmen who crowded into tho streets were covered by vivid yellow oil-cako dust. Scores of others were imprisoned in tho upper floors. They crowded to tho window-sills, where they awaited the firo engines. A boy ■ who.'was wheeling a bread van in the street was killed by a falling door. Tho explosion commenced in the' socalled "devil's cellar," whoro a "devil" crushed tho oil-cako into meal. CUNNING RATS. (Rcc. November 26, 5.5 p.m.) London, November 25. It has been discovered that tho Liverpool explosion was. caused by tho ignition of dust particles. A workman who had a narrow escape, on not finding an exit after tho explosion, buried himself under a pile of sacks. A number of rats in a similar plight, took refugo under his body. They were in this position for two hours.
