SYDNEY MATCH. ENGLAND MAKES A FAIR START. DIFFICULT WICKET. «j Tclccraßh-Press Assc-iation-Copyrlghl (Jicc. November S-l, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, November 21. The match between the M.C.C. touring team and New South Wales began today. Tho weather was sultry, but the absence of wind prevented tho wicket from drying satisfactorily.. Tho start had to bo postponed until-two o'clock, but, after several rollings, tho pitch was somewhat improved. The attendance- numbered about 10,000. Tho teams were constituted as follow:— England: Douglas (captain), Foster, Gunn, Hobbs, Ehodes, Mead, Hitch. Barnes, Woolley, Strudwick, Hearne, and Iremonger (twelfth man). New South Wales: Trnraper (captain), Bardsley, Macartney, Cotter, Carter, Hordoru, Hoy, llinnett, Harbour, M'Elhoue, Folkard, Gregory, and E. L. Waddy (twelfth man). Truuiper won tho toss, and seat the Englishmen in.' Hobbs and Rhodesopened to Macartney and Folkard. Tho pitch was bumpy, and a. lot of Hmo was spent in patting it down. Hobbs was the more confident of tho pair. Rhodes early played a weak stroke off Folkard into the chanco which Truinper was just unable to reach. When ho was fifteen, Hobba rashly hit out at a bumping i ball from Folkard, and Bardsley, at third man, effected an easy catch.

Gunn was next man in, and opened his account by brilliantly cutting Folkard to tho boundary. Macartney bowled seven overs for six runs, and then Hordern relieved him, Macartney taking up tho attack at the other end. Four maidens followed the change, Hordern's deliveries often badly beating Gunn. The latter then mishit a "goOglio" into tho slips for one, and tbe next ball was tipped by Rhodes to Cotter at close slip, and held. Mead, who followed, was equally uncomfortable with Hordern, who was sending down big off-breaks with a. leg-break action, completely puzzling tho batsmen. Cotter replaced Macartney after tho latter had bowled five moro overs without further expense. Tho batsmen, apparently appreciated tha change, and fifty ' appeared after seventy-three minutes' play. Minnett was next tried with the ball, and Gunn gave an easy chaneo off him to Hordern in tho slips, which tho fieldsman failed to secure. A few balls later a similar chance was missed. Play was slow after tho adjournment, and tho century took a hundred and forty-fivo minutes to compile.

Gunn's fifty occupied two hours and four minutes and he gavo' two easy and two difficult chances—all in tho slips. Without adding to that total ho was run out in trying to score off a short hit to point, Mead refusing to run. Hearue, following the example of moro experienced players, displayed oxtremo caution, and had only scored two in fifteen minutes when he was caught by Carter behind tho lyickets off a fast do-' livery from Cotter. Foster then .joined Mead, who ,was playing back to most balls, and only occasionally opening out at anything loose. Tho fielding was good without being brilliant' After 5.30 p.m. tho light was bad.
