A SLANDER CASE.

GOVERNMENT CANDIDATE AS DEFENDANT. IBr Tclccranii.-PrcM Association.) Christchurch, November 24. In a slander case heard at tho Supreme Court to-day, in which Herbert C. Amos, storekeeper, of Doyleston. claimed £250 damages from John M'Uichlan, one of (ho candidates for the Ashburton scat, after evidence was heard, tho jury awarded plaintiff 40s._ Judgment was entered accordingly, with costs on tho lowest scale. Plaintiff said defendant entered his store and abused him in tho presence of other people, calling him "a thief" and "a damned I'ORue." Mr. M'Laehlan, in his evidence, admitted having been annoyed with defendant when he entered the store. Ho was irritated because he believed his signature had been obtained to a guarantee bond improperly, defendant being postmaster at Doyleston.
