PRESS CABLE RATES.

In tho Federal Senate, in reply to questions, the Government representative stated the reduction in cablo press rates would mean a direct loss to Australia by tho reduction of the terminal rate of .£770 per annum; if, say, fifty per centum of tho business should bo affected by this arrangement, tho Government had uo intention to ask tho independent cablo service to rcduco charges to country newspapers, or increase the number of words received weekly, or accept a lower subsidy in order to recoup tho loss caused by tho reduction of press rates.
