NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[By Glencoe.]
It is stated that stay-at-home backeTs were not foTtunate in their Timaru investments yesterday, and, outside Heath- ■ erbrae who scored in both hack races, the winners all paid good dividends. Stepmeter started, a warm favourite: in tho Shorts Handicap, but, Stepmaid won. Master Paul, whose chance in the Hurdles, certainly looked' second to none after'.his good showing on the concluding day at Riccarton, • had to accept defeat at the. hands of Bay Lupin. Gold Coin, who can- go fast, and who was at ono stage supposed to have-a chance in tho New Zealand Cup, was too good for the opposition in the big handicap. The owner of Aimwell has now had two Attempts to get back tho "century" which he-gave for him at Trentham, but second place on each occasion lias been his portion. He is not likely to take the Soult gelding to Melbourne, and is evidently endeavouring to win a race with him in tho hope of re-selling. Some people are fortunate iii everything they touch, while others, again, cannot dn right. A case in point .occurred recently in Wellington. In one of tho bie Government offices a sweep was promotorl on the Melbonrnc. Cup, and ono clerk, who boueht two tickets, drew The Parisian and Cadonia. The Sir Lancelot mare, Routine, who is competing at the South Canterbury Jockey Clnb s meeting at Tiinnru, mado a long .journey to tho fixture, as sho is trained at Winton. Her party expected that she would show up well in the Timaru Handicap yesterday. A colt by Ahei, from Miss Stent, is spoken of as one of the best yearlings at present in Southland. Gold Size, who ran third to Miss Livonia and True Sbot in tho Shorts Handicap at the recent spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, is a brother to Diughboy, tho winner of the "Ascot Thousand." Both are by imported Gluten from Gold Web. News is to hand from Invercargill of tho death of Mr. H. S. Irving's brood mare, Lady Lorraine, bv Lorraino (Apremont—Maria Theresa) trom Lady of tho Lake (Stedmere—Meg Merrilees). Lady Lonaine was tho dam of Carnegie and Warsaw, both by Stepniak, Cocoon, by Silkworm, and a two-year-old filly by Cnnrobert. The daughter of Lorraine, like her dam, was not a prolific breeder and missed on a number of occasions. . Lady Lorraine won both Hat anil hurdle races during her torf career, and earned tho distinction of being tho first jumper in Southland to win a mile and a half hurdle raco under three minutes. Nominations fw the Manawatu Racing Club's meeting: close to-morrow. In connection with tho -.Taranahi Jockey Club's Christmas meeting, owners and trainers are reminded that nominations close with tho secretary at 9 p.m. to-monow.
