SENDING PRODUCE TO MARKET.
RAILWAY OR TRACTION ENGINE. (By Telesraph-Prcss Association.) Christchurch, November 22. At to-day's meeting of tho North Canterbury Executive of tho Farmers' Union the chairman (llr. F. G. Hurrell) moved: "That this executive deplores the attitude adopted by a number of farmers, who, though they have the railway at (heir doors, send their produce to market by traction engine." lie said (hat in his own district nearly all the wool was sent by traction engine, with tho result that damage was done to bridges en route io tho extent of .510 or .£2O every (rip. It was a penny wise and pound foolish policy, and indirectly they must bo losing money to tho railways and in the upkeep of their roads anil bridges. Mr. Luscombo seconded the motion. Several speakers supported it, Mr. Sheat declaring that farmers who did not use the railways were indirectly penalising themselves. It was but right that wool from back-country stations not served by tho railways should bo conveyed tho whole of the distance by traction engines, but farmers contiguous to railways would find it cheaper to use them rather than send their wool by traction engine. Tho motion was agreed to.
