DR. KARL KUMM.
I'ROil THE NIGER TO THE XII,E. To-day; there will arrive in t'Ue Empire City oiio of tho mast of: mocliTU; Afrirau explorers, . Dr. ■ Karl Kumm, D.l'b., : Hon,. K.lt.G.S.y etc. Tile large Town Hall has bten engaged, and lie is to giro, n lecture, (illustrated by limelight views) entitled "From tlie Niger to the Nile." Tlig title serves to indicate the position of tho commencement, and alio of the end of the exploring expedition which he recently led [through North Central Africa. ■.•Starting from Northern Nigeria, Dr. Kunim passed into German territory—the hinterland of the Kamertin Colony—and thence into, the Shari division of the French Congo. It is his progress from this point until he reached the AngloEgyptian outposts—that is, in tho central stages of bis journey-that the geographical interest of Dr. Kunim's expedition is mainlv found. However, it is not so much tho route which ho travelled as tho peoplo whom he met that interests people in civilised countries. I'ormerlv, the interior was supposed ,to be almost depopulated, but Dr.Kumm found it, in parts, to -be .teeming, with'inhabitants. It is his account of the customs and physical . characteristics, of these people - which is most interesting from the point.of view" of a European. H° found them divided into innumerable tribes, with as many different modes of livins us they had dialects. Inquiries made at the, Dresden showed that many seats were being booked, and that a considerable portion of the hall had had to ba reserved.
