THE COST OF LIVING.
The cost of living-in-Britain has increased to such an extent that several prominent London newspapers are demanding an investigation. Coal, it is pointed out, is is. higher than previously, while milk is now .id. 'n quart. The dealers' prices for these commodities will remain unchanged until next March at least. .Against this, it has been ascertained that the. average wage of the masses in England is 15s. a week. The "Daily News" declares that the rise in prices is due to. the middlemen having suddenly discovered that they can regulate the market. It further calls upon the Government to establish agricultural colleges. The Smallholders' League is sending lecturers into the country to advocate combination against the middlemen, and tho necessity for fostering the neglected intensive agriculture and scientific farming.. ."It is unfortunate," too London "Daily News" says, "that Great Britain cannot accept the axiom", that Great Britain cannot feed herself. As it is, Danish, Dutch, or Siberian butter sells before thellocal produce, "and the sanle thing applies to" wheat. Dutchmen." Danes," and Belgians arc shipping milk to London at prices l6ss'than those charged .by the present combine. Danish butter controls the market because' English '.dealers declare that the local product will not pay them."
