SHORTAGE OF BUTTER.
PROSPECTS FOK LOCAL Sf'PPLIES. • t TUo manager of the Mangatoki Dairy Company, Taranaki, states that the output from bis factory for the month of October shows a decrease of twelve and n half tons as compared with the correspornliiijT month of last year. Ho is of the opinion, too, that there is an almost equally largo falling off at tho various factories throughout the irhole of Ihc Taranaki district. Tho "Manavatu Standard" says inquiries point to tbe.fnct that dairy fanners in tho Manawatu district havo had a similar experience, and that, there is a general falling off in tho milk supply when compared with last, year. A local dairyman slated there is every probability that this will lott(J to a considerable rise in priees during the coming winter, more especially in view of tho fact that prices on the Homo market are at present in advance of local prices. This, he contends, will almost cortainly causa many of the dairy companies to ship, all their produce up till late in the season, and will result in a considerable shortage in the local supply. Asked how he would meet, the difficulty, ha stated that so far as he could see the only way was to increase local prices in proportion to tho prices now obtaining on tho Homo markets. This, of course, might not meet with the opproval of consumers; nevertheless, it might be the means of Obviating a uracil higher rise at the timo of the. year, namely,'the winter, because'exporters would not then bo temfcted to continue shipping all their output Home.
