INDIGNATION AND SORENESS.

RELIED ON MUNICIPAL PROMISE. Some plain speaking was indulged iiJ last evening by the spokesmen of a deputation of Kilbirnio ratepayers, which interviewed tho City Council last evcmni; with reference to their recreation ground. Mr. J. J. Clark, the principal sneaker, said that a promise had been made that .£2OOO would Iks placed on tho estimates for their recreation ground. It had since transpired that this vote wae to w> shelved for another twelyo months. There was a great deal of indignation and soreness in the district about this matter. That JG2OOO had been originally earmarked for this special purpose-they had boon paying rates for it during the last five or six years, and now it hud been chiselled out of tho district. Ihe land in tho first instance was secured to the district for tho solo purpose of a recreation ground, by tho Crawfords, in a deed of gift. Since then the > council bad taken the 16ft. strip for road purposes—an illegal act, declared the speaker. Tho council had commenced the year with a balance of .£7OOO. That had gone. Increases of pay that had been grouted all round, had swallowed up a good deal of

Mr. A. A. George said that the rights of Kilbirnifl had been wantonly disregarded. Kilbirnic asked for tho barest justice in this matter.

Tho Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford) said that ho was absolutely nnd solely responsible, as head , of the Finance Committee, for the present situation. Tho fact with regard to tlie balance of .£7OOO at fhe beginning of tho year was that the general estimates and other commitments had swallowed up tho balance, and had the council gone on without reviewing its position thev would have been £8000 to tho bad. Ho was afraid that nothing could bo done this year. The deputation then withdrew.
