UNDER LOCAL CONTROL. _ The supervision and administration of industrial school work is now a function of the district hospital and charitable aid boards. upon this new sphere of district charitable aid, at the monthly meeting of the Charitable Aid Commiltoe of tho Wellington Hospital Board yesterday, Mr. A. 11. Truebridge, superintendent of charitable aid work in the district, stilted that tho number of children chargeablo to tho board on September 30 was 253, distributed as follow:— 206 are ot the Wellington Receiving Homo; 22 at St. Joseph's Orphanage; !) at Stoke Industrial School; 5 at St. Mary's, Nelson; i ut Wercroa Training Farm; 2 at To Oranga Home; 2 at Auckland Industrial School; 1 at Cavcrsham Industrial School; 1 at St Andrew's, Nelson; and 1 with the District Agent Infants Life. Tho cost of these to the bdard he set out thus:—Education Department's claim (3 months), .£IO9O 2s. 9d.; District Agent Infants' Lifo (3 months), £3 55.; St. Andrew's Orphanage (3 months), £1 17s. fid.; St. Mary's Orphanage (3 mouths), ,£2l "si Gd.; St. Joseph's Orphanage (3 months), .£35 7s. Id. Total, £1157 19s. lOd. Adding tho estimate at St. Joseph's for two months (£7O), and deducting recoveries for three months (£278 18s. Bd.), the net total for the September quarter was £919 Is. 2d. The charge made by the Department and the various institutions was 7s. Od. per week, with tho excoption of a few instances in the case of tho Receiving Home, whero os. Gd. only is charged. Of the fifteen children committed during the quarter, twelvo wcro by recommendation of the board. "The average amount recovered from thoso who contributed was 4s. sd. per child per week," stated the. superintendent, "but this average is of little value until confirmed by observation over n longer period. The amount recovered during the quarter works out at an averago of Is. Bd. per week on tho whole number of children. This will be a useful average when taken over a longer period, and meantimo subject to confirmation it shows that every child committed costs the board 5s lOd. per week net." The above roport is to bo submitted to the Hospital Board at its next meeting.
