COOKS AND WAITERS.

THE HALF-YEARLY MEETING. The half-yearly meeting of the Cooks® and Waiters' Union was held in the Trades Hall last evening, Mr. A. Telfcr being in the chair. Inward correspondence comprised eomo 200 communications. They included eomo CO or TO telegrams, asking for workers to fill vacancies that were offering. Tho secretary reported that he had been unable to'secure as-many waiters as had been ■iurinircd for. and that (hero was also a scarcity of men ready to accept porters' situations. There were, however, still a number of, cooks unemployed and available for situations in town or country, l'ifty had been sent to the country during tlio month as a result of tho formation of branches of tho organisation in the four largo country towns ... The Labour party wrote asking for a donation towards the election expenses of the six Wellington Labour candidates. It was decided to vote .£'lo. The balance-sheet; and financial report (particulars of which have been r*ublished) were read and adopted. Practically tho whole of the retiring officers were re-rltctcd unopposed. Tho oniv new officers were the treasurer and ono* committeeman. One member of tho committee retired to enable a section of the workers (barmen), hitherto unrepresented, to have a voire in the management. The vacancy was filled by tho election of a member from the ranks of the branch mentioned. In thanking liiomWs for his re-elec-tion, tho secretary (Mr. Carey) stated that this was the tenth occasion on which ho had been returned unopposed. During the past month (since he had beenselectcd as Labour candidate for the Wellington North seat) there had been some talk of a section of members of tho union not having eonMoneo in him. His unopposed return now and on previous occasions was sufficient answer to any suggestion that he did not retain the confidence of llw whole of the members. By special revolution it was decided to civo up the old title of "Cooks and Waiters" <ind adopt "Hotel, Club, and Restaurant Workers' Union." The registrar will bo asked to register tho body under that namf, the secretary explaining that tho law now permits of such alteration without the entity of tho union being affected in any way.
