YACHTING SEASON.

OPENED ON SATURDAY. Judging by the large number of people who visited the Boat Harbour on Saturday last, yachting. in Port Nicholson is certainly gaining in popularity. The weather was perfect, and the yachts were seen at-their best. The tug Muritai took a large number of people aboard, and cniiscd round amongst the yachts. Shortly after 3 p.m. a cannon was fired, and the commodore of the Port Nicholson Yaoht Club (Mr. C. ,T. Ward) declared the ' season open. In his srlccoh, . Sfr. Ward referred to the way in which yachting in Wellington was gaining ground, and ho hoped that tho opening of the next yachting season would be a , much bigger event than tho present one. After the yachts had cruised round for somo time, they camo back to. the Boat Harbour, and their crews boarded the flagship, the Government steamer Tutanekai, where refreshments were served. The vessel was gaily decorated with flags, .and those who were fortunate enough to bo at tho opening spent a very enjoyablo afternoon. ' . ■

CRUISING CLUB. The Wellington Cruising Club opened its season on Saturday afternoon. The ynchts cruised round the harbour in company, and then saluted their flagshipWhite Heather.
