SALT FOR DAIRY COWS.

TESTS OF INTEREST. The large percentage'of salt that is drained out cf the average dairy cow's system ;in .the. milking is a point that probably 'escapes th« attention of the general dairy farmer. ,The ' inventor of the Babccek milk tester publishes the results of recent experimental, trials .with regard to the giving and withholding of. salt in the daily feeding of milking cows. If., was found that if salt was absolutely "with-; held the effects were shown witfiin from two to three weeks, and that even 'while, exceptional instances went longer with-! our ill-effects, yet sooner or later the animals developed a decreased, milking yield, and generally a lower state of vitality. Tne cffccts were worst at calving time, or immediately after,, and also in the heaviest milk producers. The need of salt was further found to .bo greatest in. the case of cows fed mostly in the cowhouse, and least'among those 'kept principally on pasture. The outcome.of the tests indicated that on the average milking cows' required not less 'than 2oz. daily in their food, and tho conclusion come to was that cows,in milk, when outside, should have access to roclcsalt as a lick, and when indoors the 2oz. per cov.per day should he mixed in the food in' the ordinary (rraiiular form.
