SOCIAL AND PERSONAL,
Acknowledgment. The matron of the Wellington _ Hospital wishes to acknowledge the following donations':—lllustrated papors from her Excelloncy Lady Islington; books and magazines, Mesdames Ernest Hatfield, Holmes, Knox, Simpson, T. Chegwin, A. Turnbull; flowers, Misses Price and Rice; garments, Miss Greenwood; dolls, Miss Tuston; chair, Mrs. Hamilton. Miss Grace Palotta. Word has been received by friends in Sydney of Miss Grace Palotta, who writes (o them from Vienna, under date of Sop- . teniber 25, says the "Sydney Morning Herald." Miss Palotta's deep sorrow at the death of her mother has been lightened by many cablegrams and letters of sympathy from dear friends all over Australia and New. Zealand, and whilst she is endeavouring to answer these, one by one, in the meantime she expresses her gratitude for so much kindness. At present Miss Palotta has no plans, "but as work seems the only thing to do, I'll try to make a start cither here, England, or America." It seems that the director of the Burs? Theatre, Vienna, wishes ' the accomplished comedienne to study a fine German part, and then give a trial performance at a dress rehearsal. However, she has never actually acted in German before a German audience, nnd is not especially eager for the ordeal, so she will visit London for a few weeks (October nnd the present month), as she is favourably known to many of the leading managers there. A longer stay in Vienna after such a bereavement would in that way bo avoided. At the timo of writing the Viennese were going ma<l about Caruso, vcho was singing nt three operatic performances, the stalls' and boxes for which we-ro sold out at trebled prices weeks before he arrived.
