At the meeting of the Maslerton liornugh Council la=t evening, Councillor ViTiitiee entered nn emphatic protest against , the. correspondence and advertiseini'iits which wero appearing in outside newspapers, alleging tliat Masterton was in u condition ol bankruptcy. 110 stated that Masterton was as solid as any other town in -Now Zealand. Councillor Kilititt said lie thought it was time that a protest was entered. Councillor o'l/Wiry suggested that an indignation meeting be held. It was not right that damaging statements should be circulated concerning the town without contradiction. Councillor Temple said that ho felt .strongly upon the subject, and hoped the Mayor would take it up. The Mnyor stated that' it would be a hard matter to refute the statements. The author merely made statements and left the public to presmno that the position was the result of No-License. Councillor Temple remarked that the question was not one of License or NoI.imise. The statement! made were detrimental to the (own, and it was the cliity of the council to contradict them. The Mayor did not think that much harm would be done. The falsehood always name back upon the authors. The business men outside the town knew that the statement's were unreliable. Councillor Temple stated that he was prepared to move a resolution at next meeting upon tho subject, and to support it with fact.-. The Mnyor said that he would accept such a resolution, though he did not know how anybody would benefit materially by it. The matter was then allowed to drop.
