The society was a legally constituted body, and, according to Clauso 2in its articles ol' association, it was formed to encourage the study of music, elocution, literature, and art, and to hold competitions in which prizes in money or otherwise were to bo given; and not merely that, but to establish for those studies, as was done in tho artistio centres of Europe. Under the articles' of association ilioy could not mako t money. Further, the competitions wcro to bo held annually. (Applause.) So anxious were tho members of Ilia : committee to make tho 1 competitions a; i success that weeks ago tho members all personally signed n guarantee to meet any possible loss. (Loud applause.) Only last week the members became a littlo aniious, and, he'd a meeting, as tho prospect was not too promising, owing to several days' bad weather at tho commencement of the competitions, and soino were pulling long faces. Thanks, lio\vover, to the excellent patronago which had been accorded sinco, they would' finish up on tho right side. Tho profits modo would be held in trust by tho committee, according to its articles. Tho committee proposed to increase tho amount of priae money to bo allotted next year. Finally, Father Hickson mentioned that tho society was largely riS sponsible for tho improvements which had been effected in tho acoustics of the Town llall. (Applause.)
