The Wairarapa B.C. has decided to have penalty conditions attached to t'ho Wairarapa Cup, instead of winners after declaration of weights being liable to a rchandicap, as hitherto. Tho scale will bo the same as those relating to the Manawatu Cup, but tho handicapper may increase them if he thinks necessary. Handicaps for the first day of the summer meeting at Tauherinikau will be published prior to tho Masterton B.C. meeting on December 21, as owing to the Christmas holidays so closely following it is not considered practicable to delay the date of acceptance closing beyond December 22.
In conncction with the Feilding Jockey Club's spring meeting, owners are reminded that nominations for all events close at half past 8 o'clock to-night, with the club's secretary, Mr. Edmund Goodbehere.

J. ll'Laughyn has returned Gold Circle to his owner, Mr. G. P. Donnelly. It is the latter's intention to give tho chestnut colt a spell for a short period. ■

B. Deeley, who will have the mount on Vice-Admiral in the New Zealand Cup to-morrow, has not yet ridden tho winner of the ovent named. Os account of tho Auckland spring meeting clashing with the. Now Zealand Cup fixture, Deeley has generally had numerous engagements to keep him in the north when tho Kiccarton two-mile race was being decided.
Golden Gauntlet (Challenger—Golden Queen), who settled the two 'IVaquair fil-' lies Ventura and Deeside, in the Debutante Slakes at Caulficld (Vic.), was bred by the Kov. Father Campbell, of Now South Wales, who is best known to the sporting world as the breeder of Antonions, who got second berth behind Poseidon in the Melbourne Cup of five years ago.
Colleen Dhu, the throc-yeax-old fullsister to Boomerang, Muskcrry, and Wimmera, was put up for public salo last Saturday at Gisborne. The bidding for the filly stopped at 100 guineas, and as this figure was below the reserve (says the Napier "Daily Telegraph") the daughter of' Merriiveo went back to her owner, Mr. C. J. Parker. The latter bought "vlousquetaire, dam of Colleen Dhu, for 170 guineas, when Mr. E. J. Watt disposed of some of his thoroughbred stock m May, 1008.

A new feature of warfare is to be tho use of illuminating pistols. These throw bullets which on striking develop a powerful white or red light that lasts eight or ten seconds, and lights up objects within a radius of six hundred feet. They are especially useful in broken country, where the searchlight is ineffective. In tho recent manoeuvres of the German army these pistols were extensively employed.
