A horrid something is haunting the neighbourhood of Takapuna (says an Auckland exchange). Its habits aro unpleasant, so far as it has yet indicated them, for it has, according to report, nearly unseated a horseman by scaring his horse, and killed a calf; and, to crown ali, has left footmarks 'fin. across, and of a nature capable of being mapped out upon a diagram. The horse wns seared at Deep Creek nbout a week ago, and the calf temporarily disappeared a few days later, oniv to bo discovered in a mangled stale afterwards. On Saturday some settlers formed themselves into a vigilance committee, and, heavily armed, stalked tho invisible creature. It was not found, but its footmarks wero duly discovered; and now the local Smithsonian Institute is arguing as lo whether they arc the spoor of a pumn, or an elephant, or a banshee. Probably if taniwhas were not purely mythical boasts, it would have been a taiiiwha. No inquest has been officially held to discover, what, killed the calf, and as the rider of the scared horse did not have much opportunity lo examine the intruder its nature is a pleasant mvstery. I'or the sake of keeping up a. lively interest ill a suburb where tho evenings are of a. country peacofulness, ami for other reasons that havo to do with I heir own feelings, the people who have been investigating the apparition aro no doubt earnestly hoping that it will turn out to be a real live User,
