(Bt Ulencob.] It seems to bo a somewhat general impression that the Highden stable will start only Kilos-tori in tho New Zealand Cup, and that Boanerges will be reserved for events run on oilier days of tho C.J.C. meeting. Tho sensational gallop put up by Bliss at Riccarton yesterday is just what , one would expect from Mr Hunter's luaro, who is clearly improving with age. On passing through hero with the Stcpniak mare, Trainer R. Goosoman remarked: "The mare would surprise some of them." Fven if she is beaten in tho race, slio h v v . ecrtaiiiily done litis already. Tho straight course at Riccarton will be ail in favour of lrer, as, being a little flighty, there is a chanco of her getting away badly, but her great pace should soon enablo her "to sc-e who's who," without bumpiug. Some sixteen horses wcro shipped Bouth by the Maori last evening. Tlieso were Merrivonia and Bracken, in charge of J. Ayers; Beacon, Birklino, and Goldemar (F. Porter); Mcndip (C. Jackson); Longstep (J. Matthews); Irnnui, Effort, Ebonite, and Mastillia (J. W. Lowe); Turbine (W. Davies); Varna, Odessa, and Ahuapai (V. Cotton). C. O'Neill wc-nt to Christchurch by Saturday's boat. He has been engaged to ride Dan Leno in tho hurdta events at the Riccarton carnival. A private telegram received in town yesterday states that Goklfinder _ pulled iip fore after working yesterday. This news will not be relished by backers of tho New Zealand Cup favourite. There has been much talk in town during the last two days about a great gallop supposed to have been done by Merrivonia on Saturday. Mr. Ames's mare was sent a milo with Mcndip, who was conceding Iter a good amount of weight. Tho pair finished together, but. as far as can' 1» gathered, tiro timo was uot remarkable. So far as can lie learned, a rider lias not yet been obtained for Trafalgar in tho Melbourne Cup (says the Sydney "Daily Telegraph"). Still, rumour h.itli it that W. 11. Smith—who has ridden him successfully cu several occasions—will be found in tho saddle when the raco is being run. This, however, is not at all likely to happen while Mr. Morton has a representative in the race. That owner pays Smith XSOO a year and "pickings." lor first call ou his tervices, and it is hardly to be expected that ho will forgo those services lor the benefit of anyone else. Mr. Morton's engagement of Smith as head jockey is ono ot tho most satisfactory racecourse deals that owner has effected. Prince Foote, who, the cablegram says, is uot likely to raco again, has won over J;1G,000 in stakes. Ho proved a great performer at three years, winning (among other races) the A.J.C. Derby, V.R.C. Derbv, A.J.C. St. Lcger, V.R.C. St. Legcr, Melbourne Cup, Champion Stakes, Cumberland Stakes, and A.J.C. Plate. Tho only occasions on which he was beaten that season, were in tho Caulfiold Guineas and the A.J.C. All-Aged Stakes, Malt King being the victor in both mile races. Prince Footo showed form in the Spring of his four-year-old career, but, after that, went right off, aud has sineo failed to "como back." Mr. J- R. M'Donald, tho well-known Levin sportsman, had a stroke of illfortune lately in'losing two good brood juntos, who wore both in foal to Gold Crc-st (Gold Reef—Nymph). One of these was Maximize, who was bred at Mangatarata. and who was by Tho Possible from Julia by lngomar from Sylvia. Tho other was Kukirikiri (dam of Ileathorlca Lass, Controp and Ascalon) who was by Torpedo from Kopcki by The Mule from L T ira by Traducor from Young Sharkic by Glaucus from Old Sharkie by Riddlesworth. In writing of tlio Bushy Park yearlings last Monday it was inadvertently staled flint Ran l?au was own sister to Irish Twist. This was scarcely correct. Uau Ran and Irish Twist are both from Torori, but the former is by the Dunodin Cup winner Gipsy King, and the latter by lngomar. The Bushy Park yearlings include a colt from Kan Ran, and a (illy from Amai, who is by St. Cyr (St. Lcgcr —Hazel) from Ran Ran, Royal Simon, who paid 'lie big dividend for second place at Waverley on Monday, is by Sweet Simon (Cvreniaii— Ma Mi'o Rosette) from Dolly, who is own sister to that good horse Fireworks (Sou'wester— Co.vla). Adaro and lioynl Simon aro the only two representatives of Sweet Simon that have raced ?o far. Hie firstnamed won at tlio first start, and Royal Simon is said to have been unlucky to lose.
