AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL'S ANNUAL KEPORT. The report of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, to be presented at the annual meeting to bo held on November C discloses a satisfactory financial position. The number ol' centres comprising (lie association remains at five as heretofore. Tho (Jtngo, Canterbury, and Wellington Centres have maintained their strength, the Auckland Centre has been materially strengthened by tho addition of a new athletic and a harrier club, whilo tho Southland Centre, which for some time had not shown the activity which is characteristic of tho other centres, has shown signs of once more holding its own. After giving tho results of the Now Zealand championships and cross-country championship the report states that two applications for records were granted during tho year—R. Opie, 220 yds. run in 22sec., and Ci. I'. Kedda.ll, 120 yds. hurdles run in 153-lflsec. The latter performance being better than the previous Australasian best, application has been made to tho Australasian Union for recognition as ail Australasian record. The council emphasises the necessity for immediate action if the Dominion is to bo represented at the Olympic Games at Stockholm in 1912. In this connection steps have been taken to form a permanent Olympic Committee, representative of all amateur sports bodies interested, which should deal with all matters affecting representation. The Australasian championships will be held in Wellington on December 2G and 27 of this year. Reing a two-day meeting, in addition to the usual championship events a large number of handicap athletic and cycling events have been included, and it is confidently expected that the meeting will attract'the largest gathering of athletes yet seen at any gathering within tho Dominion. The balanco-slieot shows a credit of ,£2(l 7s. lOd. on tho year's undertakings. The bank balance of the association stood at .£3B lis. sd. on 'September 30,' at which date there was also a cash balanco of JC2 Us. sd.
