DISEASES IN STOCK.

ADDRESS BY AN EXPERT. An address on discuses and injuries to stock was E;ivon at Levin on Friday by Mr. D. ll.' Rait, M.R.C.V.S., the chair being occupies! by Mr. 11. .T. Richards. Dealing with the question of milk fever Mr. Rait stated, according to the "Chronicle," he felt sure the trouble was due to the absorption of the butter-fat. This conclusion was borne out by the fact that cows having milk fever were invariably mcd testers. Seldom, if ever, did they liave a difficulty in calving or an inflammation of the udder. Nothing occurred in fact to lessen the butter-fat production of tho cow. As a treatment tho injection of air was splendid, but there were other things to be attended to, especially the position of the cow. She must be" stacked up and not be permitted to remain on her side, as they quickly suffocate, tho pressure of the rumen or paunch being too great on the lungs. The danger of drenching while unconscious was pointed out. Mammitis was also gone into at length, and Mr. Rait warned his hearers of the menace v.-hich to his knowledge had seriously affected several dairy farmers not many miles from Levin.
