NOTES AND COMMENTS. RACING AT TUENTIIAM TO-DAY. {BT Gi.fncoii.l Tho Wellington Racing Club's spring meeting opens at Trcntham to-day, when tho principal events to to decided are the Wellington Handicap (one milo and quarter) and the Wellesley Stakes, for two-year-olds (four furlongs). Tho mooting will bo concluded on Monday, when the Champion Plate, weight for age (one mile awl a quarter), will bo decided. Special train arrangements havo l>een mado for to-day by which trains will leaveTo Aro for the racecourse at 10.2S a.m. and 10.13 a.m.; and leave Lambton Station for the racecourse at 10.15 a.m., 10.55 a.m., 11.5 a.m., and 1.5 p.m. Scratchings ill connection with the meeting are:—Nyland for the Shorts Handicap; Adare, Kilts, and Ladrone for all engagements. Mr. J. Buckley has throo candidates in 'ic Wellesley Stakes, but Stepney may be withdrawn in. favour of Jan and Champagne. The P.-ner has gone sore, and was not brought to the Trontham meeting. It is slated that he is an unlikely runner at Riccarton. The truck work this week has not thrown much light on the two principal events at Trontham to-day, and on all sides the issues are reported as very open. Bobrikoff, who arrived at Trcntham on Thursday night, was sent out to do halfpace work yesterdav. and was very lame after pulling up. The trouble appeared to be serious, and although he had not been withdrawn from the Champion Piato up till last evening, it is generally considered that he will not be able to start in that -event. Soman, ono of the favourite candidates for tho Hack Steeplechase to-day, was on tho tracks yesterday., but did not impress with the manner in which he finished at the end of a round. Nedra, another candidate for the fame race, jumped badly in a schooling task. Allurement, who was a winner at tho recent Napier Park meeting, is very well at the present time. The Soult maro is engaged in the Spring Selling Plate at Trcntham to-day, and will be ridden by W. Young. Two candidates that impressed -track watchers at Trcntham yesterday wen Long-stop and Longwood. Tho former who has always performed well on th< Trcntham course, is engaged iu til Shorts Handicap this alteruoon. He chances in this race will depend a gooi deal on tho position which slie draws a tho barrier, as tho field promises to be t very largo one. The Porirua hunter, Salopian, will b< ridden in the -Steeplechase to-day by tin ex-Southland jockey, 11. Coker. Patriotic, who is well spoken of, will be fairly tested in the Rimutaka llandi cap t'o-day as he is opposed to Severn: recent winners including St. Bees, Kina and Vega. Among tho famous brood marcs that have left_ a number of brilliant winner; on the New Zealand Turf, the name of Indian Queen will always be prominent, While not perhaps so successful as the great Frailty. Indian Queen has done remarkably well in throwing such brilliant pei-formers as King Hilly, Aborigine, and Maori King. The three horses named were all sired by Merriwce. \ younger member of the family is Our Queen (by Birkenhead), who lias already been seen in winning form, and who will be a oompolitor in the Final Scurry at Trcntham I o-day. Tho imported horse, Charlemagne TI, ivill have three representatives in the Wellington JSCalies this afternoon, namely lan (a half-brother (o Scatty), Champagne a half-brother to Oivoi), and Enneiiery mare, Watershoot. Ennengarde showed considerable pace in the Hastings States early this month, but was net hen seasoned enough to battle out the inish. An interesting fealuro of the Wainui handicap this afternoon will be the preionee in the field of several New Zeaand Cup candidates. Last season the icld contained the winner of the Cup, liridge. Perhaps this season's winner nay be among t'he starters this afternoon. The lion. J. D. Ormond is always a ibcral supporter of tho Wellington llaew Club's meeting and, to-day, ho will
liavo representatives in every race but Hie Steeplechase and the Selling Plato. Mr. 11. Whitney has horses engaged in five races. Mr. J. If. M'Donald will have his colours carried in four races, while Sir Geo. Clifford, "Mr. llighden," and Jlr. J. Buckley aro each represented in three different' races. To-day the Caulfield Cup will come up for decision, and this year the result jivill bo awaited with more than usual interest by New. Zeolanders, for Lady Medallist is engaged in the raco, and this good maro will probably bo supported by anyone in Wellington who has an investment in the raco. Though, on several occasions, an outsider has popped up in. this race, there would not seem to be much likelihood of this occurring this year, if wo are to judgo at all by the state of the batting market. Th« ex-New Zealand mare is a very warm favourite, and is quoted at a ve»ry short price, with Aurofodina next in demand, and the remainder practically unquotwL 'l'ho mare is exceptionally well treated, and her defeats in the nntnmn were most fortunate for her prewnt owner. Late last night a patron of the Porirua stable, where the maro was formerly owuod ana trained, received a cablegram from Melbourne stating that trainer J. W. Noud thought the daughter o£ St. Alwynno could hardly go amiss. Tlie news of Hie breakdown o£ Bobrikoff will bo received with regret by all lovers o£ a good horse. His owner, Mr. T. H. Lowry, was cn his way to the meeting wlien ho was apprised of tlio news, and lie was naturally surprised at tlio intelligence. So far, no particulars aro to hand as to tho extent of the damago, but it is fairly certain that the black champion will not race again for many a long day. Equitas is a sure starter in the Short'# Handicap at Trcntham to-day. TRACK GALLOPS AT FLEMINGTON. Uj Telegraph—Press Association—OoDyrlebl Flemington, October 20.
