DR. NEWMAN AT VICTORIA HALL. | Dr. Newman addressed a crowded mc-eting in the Victoria Hull last night, about 200 being present, 110 had an ex.ccllcnt reception, lie pointed out that Wellington was stagnant and dull because the Ministry was doing nothing to open up its splendid back country. In the new Public Works Statement "there were seven railways being constructed in the Auckland district, at a cost this year of .£170,000, and one short line was Wellington's promise, from Ohakunc to li'aetihi, and .£15,000 was votod. For every XI voted lor Wellington ,£3l was voted for Auckland railways. Did they wonder that _ Wellington was dull and Auckland flourishing? Auckland's back country was ' being opjnecl up. by many railways, . and Wellington was being starved. Last year Wollington was promised thing's from electricity manufactured at the Akatarawa. This year it was dropped, but .€375.000 would bo spent on Lata Coleridge. Tourist traffic was catered for lavishly in Auckland and Otago, while Wellington's hot springs, the finest, the most powerful healing springs in New Zealand, were utterly lie asked how could things be otherwise than dull when AVellington was so neglected. In the rcoess, if elected, ho would devote himself to a crusade to unite town and country in a demand for their rights from Parliament. lie urged his hearers to sink all small differences and unite for the one great cause—a change of Government. Twenty-one years of anv Government was too long. He urged tV.en: to vote solidly and return the Opposition candidates, and especially the very able young Opposition candidate, Mr.' Bell. \V vote of thanks and confidence was carried with enthusiasm.
