PIGS FOR EXPORT.
THE NECESSITY FOR PASTEURISATION. ; Increased attention has been directed to pig-breeding, which, when conducted under nroper conditions, offers a lucrative by-products to the dairy farmer. So says tho Minister for Agriculture in his annual report. Some idoa of the expansion that has taken place may, says the Minister, bo gained from the fact that during the year ended March 31 last 13,70Gcwt. of pig products, valued at .£32,833, wore exported from New Zealand, a-s nsnjiist 2G!)2cwt. in 1909-10, and Ss2lcwt. in 1908-9. Unfortunately, says Mr. Mackenzie, the percentage of pigs suitable for export is not by any means as high as it should bs, but the Minister is confident that when thfl demonstrations ho has authorised to prove the necessity of pasteurisation of dairy factory by-products arc appreciated by dairy farmers, and pasteurisation becomes general, tho full profits from pig-rearing will bo secured, nnd this important branch of the milk producer's operations will bo placed on a sound and satisfactory basis. The Health authorities of Britain are very strict in their requirements regarding imported pig products, and therefore inspection at this end must be very stringent. Tho Minister aiys he has noted that producers in several districts are earnest in their desire to pines the bacon and pork industry on a good fcoting. large cooperative undertakings have been established and give promise of being entirely successful. More attention is also being paid to the class of stock rearal, and breeders of pedigree pigs are finding no difficulty in selling all they can produce.
