NO-LICLWSE AND WAIEI. fßy Telegraph.—Press Aseociation.) Waihi, Octoler 17. A curious mistake in the transmission ol a wire to the Alaypr of Waihi (Mr. J. Newlh) led to a (jeputation of" business men and property-owners waiting upon him this aitcruoun. it appears tliat the wire, as rci-eived by the .Mayor, was as l'oiiows:—"Did town proporuos iucrcaso in valuo as the result ot abolislimp ■icenses." The Mayor's answer was "No. itiis answer was made the text for a public statement by the No-License lcadurs that property yaiuos had decidedly increased in Waihi during the period of No-License. A deputation thereupon waited on tho Mayor in connection with these statement*, and the Mayor then explained that a reieronce to tho original copv of th-3 telegram received from Wellington showed that tho word "increase." should have bosn "decrease." Ho iurther stated that if the wire had been received as put in at the To Aroha office, his reply would have been "Yes," as, in lii's opinion, Waihi had not received either moral or material benefit as a result of No-License. The Mayor has made a statutoiy declaration to tho alovo effect.
