CAPTAIN WATSON GOES SOUTH. (Uy Tolecraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, October 17. The Conciliation Council (Mr. P. Hally, Commissioner) will sit in Dunediii tomorrow morning, to hear the assessors in tho dispute between the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Ltd., and tho other largo shipowners and tho Merchant Service Guild. Captain D. J. Watson will be the sole representative of the guild at this conference. Payment for overtime worked is an important feature of tho demand, and it is anticipated that this question will form tho central point of the dispute. In some quarters tho prospects of a satisfactory agreement aro regarded as comowhat remote, as it is staled tho Union Steam Ship Company is likely to refuse any demands for overtime. Others, again, aro very sanguine, and fully expect a settlement. Captain Watson arrival from Wellington by the Maori this morning, and left by tho first express for Dunedin. Seen at Lyttcllon by a reporter, ho staled that there was no change in the position of affairs, ami nothing fresh to report in regard, to tho dispute between the officers of tho small coastal lM>a.ts_ and tha owners. Practically tho whole of the flppjt of small steamer; w:is now laid up. With regard to the sitting of tho Conciliation Council at Dunodini to-morrow ho was unable lo givo nny information.
