According to a notice in the New Zealand "Herald," he had tho unique distinction of being tho sole survivor of the historic Wairau massacre. The son of tho late Captain J. JI. Bollairs, of the Royal Nnvy, he was born in Brittany, Franco, in 1824. Educated in ms native placo and at Newcastle-on-iyne, England, Mr. Bellairs came to Nov.Zealand early in 1813. Landing at Nelson, ho joined one of the survey parlies dispatched to survey tho Wairau Plains on behalf of Hie New Zealand Company. Shortly after beginning operations, all tho survey parties were turned off tho laud and their huts burnt to the ground, by the order of tho Miiori chief Raupnraha. Mr. Bellairs subsequently joined the ill-fat«d expedition sent by the Government to apprehend the chiefs who were responsible for this act. llic result is well known, for about; twenty Europeans, including most of tho leading men of Nelson, vcro cruelly and treacherously massacred, after their surrender to Rauparaha, under promise of safety. Mr. Bellairs was one of the few who effected their escape. He afterwards went to Australia, whero ho was engaged in survey work. After tho action of tho Eureka Stockade, he took cipher dispatches for the officer in chargo of tho Ballarat military encampment. About 18G2 Mr. Bellairs returned to New Zealand, and was engaged by tho Government in making ' surveys, under the lato Major Ileaphy, during active operations in the Waikato.
