MIRAMAR WATER WORKS.

Jirodie, Mayor of Miramar, stated that the occasion marked au int. jiorlant phase in the history of th« borough. When it was considered that it was only seven years sinec Miramar had been constituted a borough, it would bo seen (hat great progress had been made. He looked on tho progress oi .Miramar as one of tho features of the expansion of Wellington. It would not 1)0 many years bel'oro tho city would «]>• sorb a great many of tho suburbs and tako up tho position of being indisputably the great city of 'New Zealand. I'h» extent of tho Miramar reticulation was about 8j miles, anil the reservoir woulo provide a week's supply of water in the event of an extreme drought, Watei would be supplied at the rate of Is, net 10110 gallons, and, considering tho distance from the main city reservoir, tlm seemed a very reasonable charge. Mr. Mestayor, the, consulting engineer, merited congratulation for the manner in which he had carried out the work, and tliey also owed a debt of gratitude to Ml'. Morton (city engineer) for valuable assistant rendered. Mr. 1. I'. Luke, M.l\, stated that h« was looking forward to the time when Miramar would bo incorporated in the City of Wellington. Tho time was not far distant, when not only Miramar but ICnrori as well would also be merged ill tho city, and thus make Wellington tho "Empire City of the Dominion." 'J'lio. borough was grtting its water from tho City Council at a very low rate. Ho hoped that the prosperity which thn borough had experienced in the past would be maintained and increased ill tho future. Jlr. J. Smith apologised for the abscnco ot the Mayor of Wellington. 'Ho also referred to tho progress of the borough, and the benclit which woti'd ncci'uc to tho district through having a water system of their own. Messrs. .T. K. Fitzgerald and W. H. T). Hell also referred in terms of congratulation to the progress of the borough. After tho water had been turned on, refreshments and afternoon tea. were served.
