(From Our Special Correspondent.) C- ——— PETONE ROWING CLUB. Weather conditions oil Saturday worn somewhat ad verso for the opening of tho rowing season at Petone, but there was nevertheless a good gathering of visitors, theso including a number of ladies. Mr. R. Mothes, in declaring tho season' open, expressed, t'ho hope that the club's future would be a successful one. One thing was very gratifying and that was tho number of new members recruited during tho recess. (Applause.) Owing to tho choppy sea and stroHg northerly wind, tho procession was abandoned, and "sprint" races were held from tho pier lo the shed, a distance of about a. quarter of a. mile. Afternoon tea was served in the navals' boatshed, and was presided over by Mcsdames Lowin, Moors, and tho Misses Arrowsmith, Parsons, and Galvin. Tho results' of the races were as follow:: — Senior Fours—Star 8.C., 1; Petone, 2. J'etono led till a length from home, when Star spurted, and won by a canvas. Wellington did not start. Junior Fours.—First heat:_Petono No. 1, 1; Wellington College, 2. Second heat: Petone No. 2, 1; Star 8.C., 2. Final: Pctono No. 2, 1; Petone No. 1, 2; Wellington College, :i. This was a really good race, won by half a length. College, who wero leading at one stage, lost an. oar. The married v. single race with lady coxswains proved interesting. "Single" kept a lead nearly up to gun-shot, but were beaten on the post. Mrs. Williams steered the winning boat, and Miss Drummond was in charge of tho other crew. The officials for the day were:—Judge, Mr. R. Mothes; starter, Mr. Moore. HUTT BOWLS AND TENNIS. On Saturday afternoon a large concourse of Indies, tennis players, and bowlers assembled at the Hutt bowling green to celebrate the opening of tho season 1011-12. Tho green was rattier on the heavy side on account of recent rains, but nevertheless excellent sport was provided. A earpet of verdant green, with a. pretty setting clothed in spring beauty, with here and there blooms at their best, niado a prelty picture. Mr. 0. Trevethick, president of the club, declared tho-green open for tho season, and called upon \Mrs. Trevethick. amid applause, to throw up the "jack," prior to the commencement of play. At the president's invitation, afternoon tea was partaken of by tho visitors, the tea-tables, having for their decoration cream and red roses from _Mr. Trovethick's conservatory. Tho?o in charge of the tea and refreshments were: Mrs. Hendry, Misses Trevethick (2), and .Tones (2), and they received assistance from Messrs. Ilishwortli and Orion Stevens. The following cards were handed in at tho conelusion of the afternoon's bowling:—Love, Cameron. Finn, Wolder (s.), 20; Aliport, Cook, Palmer, Trendwell (s.), 18.
