ROUGH WEATHER AHEAD.
MR. BATES'S PROGNOSTICATIONS. According to the Government meteorologist, the Rev. D. C. Bates, there is a rough and chilly time coming for the [K"-oplc of New ZcaKuid. oshoreand atloflt in the immediate future, particularly so in the south. Present indications are for a heavy westerly gale, veering round to south, when a period of cold wet weather will prevail, with hail and snow in the southern districts. Cook Strait' and lovoaux Strait ore expected to be most unpleasant localities during this spell. Very heavy seas will be experienced on all the western coasts, while a considerable sea will bo encountered elsewhere. On Friday, tho Government meteorologist, with the co-operation of tho Postal Department, issued a special tclegTam to all the post offices in the South Island, warning the public of tho approach of a cold snap, with hail, and an cxtensivo fall of snow in the southern highlands. This mos=ago reached south in time to afford stock owners an opportunity of bringing in tbeir sheep olid cattlo to convenient shelters.
